Save Rumney Recreation Ground & Eastern Leisure Centre

                    The Council's "Promise"

In 1979/80, the Council built Eastern Leisure Centre on Rumney recreation ground. At that time the Council advised local residents that the leisure centre would complement recreational activity that took place on the field. Understandably, residents were deeply opposed to this development, fearing that further building on this land would occur in the future. Our local MP, Alun Michael, was heavily involved with this project at that time and has advised us that local residents only agreed to the Leisure Centre development after being reassured that it would be “this far and no further. Residents still remember this promise.

Alun Michael MP has given us a letter setting out this important piece of information. It was a promise that the current Council administration has reneged upon. Thus far, we have been unable to find any documentary evidence for this, other than local people remembering this “promise” and the written evidence kindly supplied by Alun Michael MP.
